On This Day In Gaming History!: April 4th, 2018

Microsoft was founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates on April 4, 1975, to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. It rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows.

The company released the Xbox in 2001, entering the game console market dominated by Sony and Nintendo. 16 Million Xbox consoles were sold in North America alone by 2006, but never managed to surpass the sales of the Sony PS2.

As of 2016, Microsoft was the world’s largest software maker by revenue, and one of the world’s most valuable companies. The word “Microsoft” is a portmanteau of “microcomputer” and “software”.
